Tummy Time

Having a hard time with Tummy Time? Try some of these alternative positions to make tummy time a lot easier. Remember that tummy time on a flat firm surface is always the preferred position for development, but you can try these other positions to help make tummy time more comfortable for your little one and help them be successful!

1. On Your Chest - This is the most natural way to start tummy time and encourage babies to be comfortable on their tummy. It is a great way to bond with your little one and start getting them better at tummy time.

Start with your body in the reclined position and lean back with your baby on your chest on their belly. As your baby gets stronger, you can continue to recline back further until you are able to lie flat and your baby is able to look up at you.

2. Over Your Lap - This is a great position to start using anytime when you are home or out. It gives you and them a break from the regular tummy time but still effective in strengthening their muscles.

Sit down on the floor with your legs straightened and place your baby on both of your legs. At an earlier stage, you can cross your legs so that your child’s head is higher than their belly. You can always calm your belly in this position with a couple gentle strokes on their back. You can also try this when you are sitting on a couch.

3. Get Down On the Floor - Your baby’s favorite person is you. At this early stage, babies are much more interested in your voice and face than any toy.

Getting down to talk to your baby to encourage and entertain them while they work on tummy time will help them stay a little longer!

4. The Superman - Babies usually like this position because they are being held by you. After a bit of practice many parents can hold a baby using this position while on the go.

Hold your baby in the tummy-time position with your forearms supporting the belly. A newborn will need more support for their head control. Walk around, bounce up and down, and move! Babies like this movement and it tends to be very calming. Always remember to alternate the sides that you hold them on so they use their muscles evenly.
